AP reports on the Bush Administration's extension of CAFE (fleet fuel economy) concessions for automakers who build "dual use" vehicles (vehicles capable of burning gasoline or an 85% ethanol/15% gasoline blend called E85).
It's a loophole in the CAFE standards that allows auto companies to build more gas guzzlers. Only about 1% of the 3.4 million dual-fuel vehicles on the road actually burn E85. (The fuel is only available at 182 stations.)
The loophole increases U.S. demand for oil. However, corn growers like it.
Democrats are not immune. During his Iowa campaign, Richard Gephardt publicized a small volunteer convoy that drove up from St. Louis in dual-fuel vehicles. I listened to the local radio program in which the leader of the convoy had to admit that the cars probably wouldn't be able to run on E85, since it was hard to find at the stations.
